Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) was conceived in 1991 by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rehman, a cardiac surgeon who had served 28 years at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), retiring in January 2004. RMI opened its hospital in 2002, its School of Nursing enrolled its first batch in 2008, and Rehman Medical College followed in 2010 as the institute expanded into formal undergraduate medical education.

The college is in Peshawar, the historic capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and gateway to the Khyber Pass, long a center of trade between South and Central Asia and home to the region's oldest public medical school, Khyber Medical College.
