Hamdard University was founded in 1991 by philanthropist and traditional-medicine entrepreneur Hakim Mohammad Said, and Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry (HCMD) was established in 1994 as its flagship health-sciences institution, admitting the first MBBS batch that year and the first BDS batch in 1999.

The college is located at Madinat al-Hikmah ('City of Education, Science and Culture') in the Bund Murad neighborhood of Gadap Town on Karachi's outskirts, a large purpose-built educational township developed by the Hamdard Foundation.

Admission criteria
