Azad Jammu and Kashmir Medical College (AJKMC) was established in 2011 and inaugurated by Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani on 8 October 2011, its creation prompted by the shortage of medical professionals exposed by the devastating 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
