KMU Institute of Medical Sciences, Kohat was conceived by Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST), whose syndicate decided in 2005 to start the province's first Institute of Medical Sciences under the direction of then-Governor KPK Syed Iftekhar Hussain Shah; it was inaugurated on 6 April 2006. It became a constituent institute of Khyber Medical University on 25 November 2011.
